“Create with Clay” hand building workshop with Lee Akins
This class is open to all levels age 6 (with parent) and older.
Find your hidden creativity in this three hour workshop. We will use the pinch pot as a way of exploring your artistic side. Pinch pots are an excellent way to focus on the meditative and healing aspects of clay. (Sign up for Workshop #3 and fire your pot too!) If this class fills, a second class will be offered the following day, November 20, 2011.
Instructor LEE AKINS was born in Texas but spent most of his early years in Taiwan. After he received his BFA in Ceramics from The Dayton Art Institute in 1975, Lee moved to Taiwan to teach K-12 art. In 1979, he returned to Texas and taught ceramics in the Dallas County Community College and then at Collin College in Plano. Lee completed his MFA in 1986 at Southern Methodist University. In 2008 he retired early and moved to New Mexico to become a full time studio potter. Lee coil builds terracotta, creating vessels and sculptures influenced by his time in Asia. Archetypal forms are covered with matt patina surfaces.

“Raku-firing: Quick and Controlled” with Miya Endo
This class is open to all levels age 16 and older.
Participants will glaze and decorate a pre-made wheel-thrown pot (or bring your own bisque pot measuring less than 5”x5”x5” or make your own in Workshop #2!) and take part in a raku firing – a quick, spontaneous technique that creates dynamic, one-of-a-kind results. The pieces will be ready to take home that day…just in time for Christmas! If this class fills, an additional workshop will be offered later that same day. In case of inclement weather, the class will be re-scheduled.
Instructor MIYA ENDO started taking pottery classes at the Indianapolis Art League (now the Indianapolis Art Center) in the early 1990’s. After a few years, she became an assistant teacher there under Bob Reiberg for classes of 5 to 12 students, and was responsible for conducting many hours of raku firings every week. Since moving to New Mexico in 1999 and establishing her own studio, she has given private and semi-private lessons in wheel-throwing and raku to children and adults.
